2015 In the Inland Northwest

I'm just going to compile some pictures of the season. This should include water and fish from Eastern Montana, Idaho Panhandle and Eastern Washington, maybe Central Idaho and Eastern Oregon as well. The snow pack has not been fantastic in the past 2 years and this year local rivers are looking rather skinny for this time of year.

A Harris & Sheldon era (late '67-'85'), has a silicon rather than agate line guide. I got a good deal but not an awesome deal and missed out on a St. Aidan. Fishing pal, Kris with a redband; OK back in the water quickly now. They are still there in the happy cooler water thanks to an aquifer recharge at key points. River greetings with some TU members at a recent fishing event. Fly fishing picture Definitely the lowest water on the Spokane river I can recall! Cutthroat have been harboring in the cooler, deep and slow moving pools. They are cautious until a good hatch brings them up. Normally you would be finding them in oxygenated riffles just as frequently. Not so much lately. Low water still, but cool enough for Mahogany duns and an imitation. Finally a bit of rain on the Spokane River. Smoke from wild fires make for beautiful sunsets. This one is over Newman Lake, Washington. The story of the season, another fire! Fly fishing picture Fly fishing picture Headed back to Bend, Oregon (think Deschutes River) over McKenzie Pass. There is good shade along the river with the foliage but even here it seemed a bit dry. Some of the coolest water in the Northwest during this long, hot, fire filled year. The springs keep it in the low 50's F. Most of the head waters to the McKenzie are spring based including Clear Lake. We rode the famous, McKenzie River Trail in Oregon. I didn't fish! I did pack a rod and gear but... Fall Creek, Oregon. It changed dramatically a short way above here where lava forms one bank and mountain side on the other. Fall Creek, Oregon Fall Creek, Oregon Fall Creek, Oregon Fall Creek, Oregon Fall Creek, Oregon Fall Creek Oregon. Fall Creek along the trail to Green and Moraine lakes in the Mt. Bachelor, Oregon area. There were trout. I didn't fish. The smaller bears; tracks after an over night rain in the Placid Lake area. The small storms brought lightening but fortunately enough water to hold off new fires. "River Water" Placid Lake, Montana. A visit with friends. A deep stretch of the Spokane that harbored a few fish in the hot summer. Water temps were warm enough for fist time "Hoot Owl" restrictions. The upper river here had some fish kills. Later in Summer it was so skinny kayakers were hiking back up just to run the few waves over and over. The Spokane river in Riverside State Park as low as I have ever seen it until 6 weeks more drought! John, casting to the sippers along the far bank and hooked up in beautiful scenery. and more cautiously sipped mayflies in the glassier water. A robust population of 12-15 inch cutthroat seems to in the river this year. They ate golden stones at times with abandon. Fishing with a family audience anyone? The biggest Cutty of the weekend smashed a red & white bobber (over the prince nymph) cast from the "Dora the Explorer" kid's spin combo! My two main fishing buddies seriously gearing up...for the Fathers' Day weekend of camping on the St. Joe River of Idaho. Fishing was great but a few days later the river was drawn down dramatically to hold Lake Coeur d 'Alene lake for recreation. Snow pack is poor and tributaries are really low this year. (June, 2015) Early closures? Almost got the shot. Shortly after the upper Spokane River opened I enjoyed swinging some caddis in the evening. We call it rattle snake creek...well this is why; complete with 6 rattles Crayfish patterns The water was heavily stained but if you got close enough for them to see your offering... Fly fishing picture The purple flowers while pretty, I think are an invasive species. It was everywhere and very hard to push your legs through as it had absorbed a lot of recent rain, unlike the ground! Fly fishing picture Fish on. We watched a trout try to go up the falls a couple times. I guess he just wanted to travel somewhere new. The scenario had an old school feeling so we fade the color a bit. Fishing a Desert stream with my buddy John aka Slim. I was fascinated by the large brown eyes. It's a rare fish in these waters. Note: keep your reel lubed! My spindle lube got contaminated and quit spinning! Fortunately it quit after a long run so I had some line to work with. Wouldn't you know it, all the pics were blurry but it was more important to keep the fish in the water. i couldn't keep my excitement. It's a blurry picture but it's largest trout I have ever pulled from my home water. Caddis events are prevalent. Fly fishing picture Fly fishing picture Iris was abundant along the river. This must be from the urban influence. A typical and fat Redband Rainbow. A new beaver lodge has sprung up in Riverside State Park. Opening day on the lower Spokane River another snap shot in low light - the little feeder creek pouring into the back eddy looked pretty when I was watching it's a snap shot but looks kinda of different tempting west slope cutthroats with big bugs Teaching the next generation New friends, great company It should have been run-off but it looks like mid summer! Some nice fish hide in the smallest buckets if things are just right...most folks would walk right by. 4 wts. and dry flies never gets old
