A little back bay spot. Tried some photo editing and here you go. Had some valuable junk saved...utility clips a.k.a. broom clip holder. Then a block of dense black foam and then some wood, nylon tyes and screws. Ugly but I know it's solid. It was almost 70 here in the Mid Atlantic but at the shore it was 50, blowing hard ESE and fog. Winter has a grip on us but I still walk the beach. Found a dead sturgeon that washed up, prehistoric looking for sure. Clamming season is here, fishing gear is put away till spring. The headliner is the first spot where the flys make it to the water.......but first I like to ride around with them. The land sled ready for the fall run of stripers and blues. My friend Hugh standing on an engine (yes, an engine......the only thing left from a boat that ended up on the flats in a storm) in 3 1/2 feet of water. Getting a better view of the far off bait. A nice stretch of beach that in the past has produced some fine catches. With the heat reaching a "real feel" of 112 degrees F it's an late night fishing trip for me. New Jersey, Atlantic Ocean.....surf fishing. Weather has turned the fish off so I found this cactus flower growing on the dunes. Hey, as fishermen we see lots of good stuff. My friend Charlie was fishing up river, his line came close to me.....really close! Does happen to you? More beach art, this time free form. I added two pieces to the work figuring it's a people's project. Winter time goofing around. I like the tail material, its from a craft store. The body/head is a complex twist with lead eyes. Down the street is a commercial fishing area. There is also a ferry to NYC on the other side of the creek. It looks like the Arctic and something you would see on Life Below Zero but no it's New Jersey....USA. It was 6 this AM...brrrrrr! A fantastic gift from fellow Flydreamer David Bullard. We've seen his big jacks, lady fish, huge surf caught snook and more. But this guy has a heart of gold. Thank you David for your generosity and talents. People have some great imaginations, case in point.....the marlin made of drift wood. It's really nice. New York City way off in the background yet looks like it is on fire as the sun goes down. Fishing for stripers out of the yak, tons of bunker all around. The bass would attack and they would scatter then a big boil. Capt Greg Dini of Fly Water Expeditions had one of my Crease Fly on board to take this redfish. Crease Flys work everywhere! Bay anchovies in tight to the beach stretching hundreds of yards each way. Ahhh fall. Update on the sunken beach boat. The high tide is now lapping at the bow, won't be long now before it falls back in the sea. Prickly pears growing on the cactus in the dunes. Old timers use to make me the jelly from them, ahhhhh so sweet. Cranberry harvest on the bogs of Cape Cod, MA. The berries float so the bog is flooded with water and the plants are beat to release the berries. Then they are pushed to the end of the bog by a boom. This has been going on forever. The first cactus flower of the season, they are actually right near where I surf fish in N.J. but this one is a transplant to my yard. Standing on the second bar fishing toward the beach with a hard running high tide. Drama! My new six piece rod, it was a four piece at the beginning of the day but after a long day of catching big bluefish this is what's left. I'll be sending it back to have it repaired...hahahaha...repair! Electric CoolAid Acid Redfish. Just playing around with an old picture of a redfish on a Crease Fly. Spring is on the way but for now I have to deal with winter. After a nights storm the early morning holds promise for good fishing. Favorite jetty on Cape Cod where bass and albies come to play. Had the camera handy when this little guy flew in the wife's flower garden. Fall fruit from the beach prickly pear cactus, makes some good jelly. Swinburne Island where immigrants that died from disease were cremated after being sent from Ellis Is. In NY harbor. Now a bird sanctuary. Cactus bloom in NJ! Yes, on Sandy Hook there are cactus that bloom into these beautiful yellow flowers. Entire sand dunes are covered with the bright yellow flowers right in the middle of millions of people....Nature is wonderful! Romer Shoal Lighthouse lots of bass hang around here. This is why I love my job, the pay means nothing compared to happy faces. Took it in the face last night a nice roller. The bass came unbuttoned and I was wet, a great evening out. Most of us have been there, the leak! Not pouring in but just a constant dribble to wet my whole leg. This is the third attempt to find the little pin holes. Bluefish bite maybe! I work as a Field Guide on the shore and marshlands taking school children to learn about the estuary and ocean. Here we are collecting samples to put in a bucket and study. On this pull we had grass and sand shrimp, some comb jellyfish and a hermit cra I'm glad someone is catching! My friend sent me this picture after we struck out the other night......it's all good. These are the least terns and they have nested here in Sandy Hook, NJ. Horseshoe crab mating means the fishing will perk up now. This was from last night when the beach was like a cheap motel on prom night. This male osprey was drying off just after diving into the water after grabbing a bunker. Then he was off again for more.....gotta feed the family. Beach combing found a few horseshoe crabs just the right size and dried out from last summer. Made a few bodkins this one with grizzly feathers, then epoxied over. Up and personal with a striped bass just before being released. The fish was coming from the back bay to the ocean so it was a dark fish plus it was a typical striper day......dark, windy and cold. This is an old hat that was retired and still brings back memories of good times fishing. The badges are from the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Tourney fly rod division. My grandson is going to start using the fly rod this year, he's 8, I bought him a 5wgt starter kit from Redington. So now I have to change gears from bunker and tye up some pan fish flys to get him to hook up to have fun. Here is Dollar Store toy I found The winter storms have exposed sunken boats and more.....snowy owls have come down from Canada. Fog rolled in with temperatures hitting 57 degrees. A week ago it was minus 12, blowing and the bay was frozen......hence the fog. My two grandsons at the vise this past rainy day, we started out simple with the Joe Brooks Blond flys.....they'll catch for sure! Landing a small school striper in the surf on cold winter's day. Good cloud cover and clear water have them right in the wash. At The Fly Tying Symposium watching Jonny King tying up a big pike fly. Jonny is the guy that came up with the Kinky Muddler and other great flys. My friend Charlie (on the right) and I took a break from the high winds, rain and no chance to fish.....so clamming was a great way to be outside and harvest some good eats. Opening Day clamming season, dinner will be great. Yellow flowers were everywhere to brighten my walk to the water. An orange tree that stands out on an overcast day. Fall in the Northeast US, beach colors are bright. Beach grass is vibrant. This bright pink jelly fish came swimming by me today as I was fishing the surf. Big king salmon on the NY Salmon River, the guy next to me landed a 40lb fish I had the furn of the run and jump but alas no landing as it took off on a final run and "pop" off. Circle of life.... My grandson wants to go to Nicaragua and catch tarpon on a fly. He's a big fan of River Monsters so I think when he gets big enough we should go. He's 8 and is into fishing as well as soccer/football.....he's just like me! Some big fat Crease Flys that I used the "Cartoon" click and hey it made me smile. All alone on the water, who would guess there are millions of people just across the bay and more on the shore. Fishing gets you away with your thoughts Big New Orleans redfish with fly in the mouth.
