Fd: What would you recommend to the anglers who want to have better pictures of their fishing trips and catches?

Nick: Pay attention to the lighting and the background. The background many times can be just as important as the foreground. Also don’t be afraid to shoot a lot. Look for interesting and different angles, sometimes just experimenting can produce really interesting shots.


Fd: How did fly fishing and photography get together in your life?

Nick: I have always loved photography since high school it was a natural progression once I graduated college returned home. At that time I didn’t take much photography of fishing, once in a while I would bring the camera on the boat to shoot landscapes and nature images. As I started fly fishing more with my nephew, I began shooting images on every trip which is how I have so much fishing content today.


Fd: How do you handle both at the same time when you are out there?

Nick: That can be tough, you want to have the camera ready all the time but you don’t want to ruin your equipment. Sometimes I’ll keep the camera around my neck while poling so I’m ready to shoot when the action happens, other times if I’m poling the boat I’ll stake it and hop down to shoot. The easiest is with three people so the person in the middle is free to shoot when the action happens.


Fd: Who are your favorite photographers?

Nick: Ansel Adams, Aaron Chang, Clark Little.


Fd: You’ve traveled to great spots because of photography. What are the places that impressed you the most?

Nick: I would say the 2 trips when I went to Patagonia, it’s such a beautiful yet harsh environment. The rock formations and the wildlife are spectacular.


Fd: What’s next for you? New destinations this year?

Nick: I plan on going to Montana, The Tailers Cup in South Carolina, a fishing tournament in September, and also Louisiana for some big redfish and black drum.


Fd: Any words of advice for the ones getting started in fly-fishing photography?

Nick: My best advice would be to have your camera with you at all times and just keep shooting.
