The steelhead coming up river from the Pacific Ocean to the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery have to travel nearly 1000 miles and pass over 8 dams. And this year, they are early to the dance! Typically these fish begin to show towards the end of March in the stretch of the Salmon between Stanley and Challis with the season closing the end of April. But a mild, rainy February lead to an early runoff signaling to the fish staged down stream, it was time to move. More than 100 fish have already made their way to the Sawtooth Hatchery with more than a 1,000 at the Pahsimerori hatchery. With the water as low and clear as it is right now, nymphing is the most effective method, but farther down where the river picks up some volume and broadens, traditional spey/swinging methods are catching fish as well. Here is a list of the best flies no matter what technique you fish: Hot Head Marabou Jig size 2, Duddle’s Steelhead Candy size 4, Tungsten Pheasant Tail Flashback size 6 and 8, Tungsten Peck’s Flashback size 6 and 8, Starlite Leech size 2, Low Water Green Butt Skunk size 6, Undertaker size 6.
