There fish are there; the bugs are there too. The missing ingredient? You! Our freestone rivers are still high and off color, but Silver Creek is fishing very well. The Brown Drakes have run their course and now caddis are taking center stage in the evenings. During the day, and depending on the weather, you will see Callibaetis, Baetis, PMDs, and even a smattering of Tricos. Now is a great time to experience the glory of Silver Creek while waiting for the rest of our rivers to clear and drop.

SILVER CREEK
The trouble with Silver Creek is not that the fish aren’t there. The problem is they are feeding with abandon and they can be a struggle to catch. Or they are not feeding at all, and they can be a struggle to catch. Here are a three tips to help solve the Silver Creek conundrum:
Timing…being in the right place at the right time is crucial to success. This is difficult to master, if you don’t spend everyday on the water. That is where a fishing forecast can be useful, or inquiring at the shop before you make plans. Generally the best fishing is always during the most pleasant time of day. This time of year that is midday into the early afternoon.
Presentation…this is a complex concept. It incorporates your leader, your cast, and your angle of cast relative to the position of the fish and the sun. To simplify, fish like a predator. Predators do everything possible to not let the prey know they are being hunted. On the Creek, this often translates into long and light leaders which allow the line to land delicately on the water as if it was a cottonwood seed from heaven. Often your fly choice is secondary to presentation.
Versatility…don’t be a one trick pony! There are so many ways to catch fish on the Creek. This begins by having a variety of flies to choose from. Always carry a well stocked box of hatch matching flies in all the stages of life from nymphs, to emergers to dries. Also be equipped with different sizes and lengths of leader and tippet so you can change from a size 22 Baetis to a size 2 streamer with ease.
Silver Creek has a lot to offer anglers, and the best teacher is time on the water. THE BIG WOOD
Still too high and muddy. It is going to be a few weeks before the Wood will be ready to go, just in time for the Green Drakes!
SOUTH FORK OF THE BOISE
The flows are still at 1600 CFS which is ideal fro drift boats and rubber rafts. We are still on the watch for the giant stone flies which typically make an appearance towards the end of June. In the meanwhile, nymphing the riffles and runs with Rubber Legged Stones and other traditional stonefly patterns, as well as San Juan Worms, Caddis Larva, beaded PTs and Zebra Midge is effective.
LOCAL PONDS
It is time to take the family to Lake Creek, Penny Lake, or Gaver’s Lagoon. All the ponds have been stocked and will receive regular stockings throughout the summer season. Whatever style of fishing you want to do, we are your headquarters. So drop on by before you take your family fishing and we will make sure you have the right gear to be successful.
SALMON RIVER
Flows are high here as well, but now is a good time to think about booking a drift boat trip for late June or early July. Once this river drops and clears, the fishing is phenomenal.
BIG LOST BELOW MACKAY
With flows at 560 CFS, this fishery is too high.
UPPER LOST- COPPER BASIN
This area follows the same pattern as the Wood, and should be fishable towards the end of the month.
