The weather in Central Pennsylvania was unseasonably warm...but very welcomed! It was bright and sunny with high temperatures in the low 50's. We fished many Central Pa streams in an effort to scout some water for our guided Spring Wild Trout trips. The Juniata River, Spruce Creek, and Spring Creek were the three main bodies of water. The Little Juniata River will be the focus of our Float Boat trips this Spring as well.
The hot flies on Spring Creek were the reliable Pheasant Tail Nymphs in sizes 16-18, Little Black Stone Flies in size 18, and Tan Scuds in size 20. Spring Creek had the most fishing pressure but we had no trouble hooking up with fish in runs that had been previously fished by other fishermen.

The Little Juniata River had more water volume and faster flows so we had some good luck using Articulated Olive Colored Sculpins. We had to work the hardest here more than anywhere we fished all weekend just because of the high, fast water. We tried fishing the edges and caught a a few but not in the numbers we are accustomed to.
Spruce Creek had perfect water level and clarity and the most actively feeding fish of all the streams. We would catch a couple on one fly and they would shut down so we would switch flies and they would be back to eating. This was the theme all afternoon and not one fly pattern was more effective than another.
So all in all not a bad weekend of fishing. Although we fished these waters for 20 plus years we never stop learning. It was an enjoyable time with some great friends and catching a few fish was just icing on the cake.
