Louisiana is universally regarded as the premier redfish destination on Earth. As temps grow cooler and days get shorter, big bull reds begin to move into the nearshore waters. The slot-sized redfish that we chase all year quickly become an afterthought when oversized bulls float to the surface. Fly fishing for redfish doesn’t get any more exciting than casting at these orange behemoths.
Less than two hours from New Orleans, Grand Isle is an easily accessible destination. Waterfront lodging is provided for up to two anglers, so there’s no need to worry with booking a room. December – February in Louisiana can be very cold, so prepare to dress appropriately on the water. Layer with thermals and windproof outerwear. Don’t forget the rain jacket.
Galveston
The Galveston View more...bay system offers a wide variety of grass flats, sand and marsh, all of which provide a healthy, food abundant habitat for redfish and trout. Located less than an hour from Houston, Galveston is an easily accessible and highly productive fishery. Though the fishing can be good year round, the most productive months are March – November, and often into early December.
Galveston redfish tend to be less finicky and more likely to take flies than the well-educated fish along the middle and lower Texas coast. Expect averages of 20-26 inches, with fish occasionally creeping into the 27-30+ inch range. Please note that all trips are catch-and-release and fly fishing only.
