After a few weeks of rain or mad wind, we finally had a small window to head south. @team_awe_son teammate on IG, Gus Montoya and I have been trying to get back to glass waters for over a year now with weather conditions and life in general as something always seems to come up. But with a sharp eye on the doppler, we saw a small window of some very calm conditions to head out on his new Gheenoe.
South bound at 4am into Everglades National Park aka "Flamingo" and tailing redfish were the target. Just as we started to pole into a fishy area, a dense fog was rolling in on us. We had some concerns it was a small storm but soon saw it wasn't dropping water. In the distance, we see schools of tail in gin clear waters over flush grass, a sight not seen in some time for us. They were munching hard, face down, just the way I like them!
I quickly come tight to a huge red but he ran pretty hard towards us and I couldn't stay as tight I as I wanted, especially the way it took the fly. I managed to get tight again and on the reel but it spat the hook mid run, drag peeling. Full on stupid jelly legs at this point because in the distance, we see more tails and baits going air born.
I'm high and tight, I make the shoot and my line blows up. A red came from left field and jacked my sighted one but instantly came off. By now, we're in some very thick fog and it was late in the morning. So, we decided to push on knowing the sun would clear it and use the cover to our advantage. I fooled this mid slot redfish to take my "Gangster Crab". I'm not sure if it was given to me from Gus or he simply left it in my truck. Either way, winner, winner, chicken dinner. Just after a few quick snaps with good friend Gus on the lens and a proper revival, the fog lifted with perfect glass waters and blue skies. It was hard to tell where the horizon started or ended and our little window was closing as time ran out for Gus' girl-friend's birthday. Glad she let us play that morning.
