Aunan is a farm in Grindal in the municipality of Rennebu in central Norway, about 1 hour and 15 minutes drive south of Trondheim. The name Aunan comes from the old norse word audr, which means deserted. Many places were given names deriving from this after The Black Death in 1347-1351. In other words, Aunan is a place with roots long back in history.
There is no farming at Aunan anymore, all productive land is leased out to neighboring farmers. Salmon fishing is the activity that sustains Aunan today. The salmon fishing concept is named Aunan Lodge, and 2004 was its first season in operation. Aunan Lodge is not located on the farm itself, but is built around some other buildings on the property down by the river.
The red main building on the picture is a converted potatoe store, which i View more...s now functioning as a restaurant and meeting place. To the right of the potatoe store, partly hidden behind the trees, there are three cabins called Målar-hytta, Kåre-hytta and Låven (far right). The cabin with the turf roof closer to the river bank is named Anfield, and was finished at the same time as the conversion of the potatoe store in 2004. Behind the potatoe store there is a buliding for storage, and the small hut to the left is used by the guides to keep flies and other fishing tackle for sale.
The salmon beat at Aunan Lodge is based on a cooperation between 13 different riparian owners in Grindal. The combined river stretch is about 5,5 km, providing a length and variation that is rarely seen on Norwegian salmon rivers.

Salmon fishing on the Orkla
The Orkla is one of the most robust and productive salmon rivers in Norway. The salmon run is 88 km from the river mouth by Orkanger to the Stoin waterfall by Ulsberg. Aunan Lodge is located in Grindal, about 55 km from the sea. Aunan Lodge offers a salmon beat of 5,5 km with 17 different pools, including renowned pools like Pollen and Igdhølen.
The length and variation of the salmon beat at Aunan Lodge is unmatched on the river. Most of the pools can be fished from both banks. This avoids tiresome opposition from the far bank, which unfortunately is often found elsewhere on Norwegian rivers. The 17 pools all have their individual qualities; some fish best on high water and some on low water. Under most conditions there will always be interesting water to fis View more...h.
